I have been sitting on this blog post for a while, reluctant to put anything out there due to the depth of the topic itself. Frankly, I'm intimidated by it! So, I'll start with this.
Somewhere within every person is a desire to go against the grain. A desire to be different than society and no longer be bound by the norm. Typically, people will go through a rebellious stage, but come to realize that being different for the sake of being different is not practical. Society has shaped and evolved over the years into the most accommodating mechanism that it can be for the purpose that it serves.
However, 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ came to Earth and turned everything as society knows it entirely upside down. Jesus didn't just go a different way that was unique and winding, he went dead on against the current.
To look at the teachings and lifestyle of Jesus Christ, we see that everything he did was entirely opposite of the norm and entirely more effective. How could we have been that far off?!
When God created the Earth, He created man in his image, and the world was perfect. Life was just as God had intended for it to be. We were created to live in a pure, selfless way. But from the moment sin entered the world, things began to slide. As God gave us the law, we began to see just how far we have strayed from life as God intended.
Then right in the middle of time, God sent his son, the second Adam. He stepped in to seek and save that which had been lost. He stopped the world and pushed everything back, spinning the other direction, redeeming it to its original purpose for those who follow him.
To study the culture of Jesus, I began by reading the book of Matthew and writing down every instance I could find where Jesus demonstrated or taught something that was opposite of the social norm. The verses are in the following post.
